White House Nominates Andrei Iancu as USPTO Director

On Friday, August 25th, 2017, the White House nominated Andrei Iancu, the managing partner of Irell & Manella LLP, to be the next Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.  If confirmed by the Senate, he would succeed former Director Michelle K. Lee, who departed in June of this year.

Andrei Iancu's practice focused on intellectual property litigation, along with all aspects of intellectual property practice, including patent and trademark prosecution, due diligence and licensing. He has represented clients in technological fields including genetic testing, the Internet, medical devices, therapeutics, telephone, TV broadcasting, video game systems and computer peripherals. In addition to his legal practice, Iancu co-teaches an advanced patent class at UCLA School of Law, where he serves as an adjunct professor.

"This is a critical time for our country's intellectual property system. AIPLA is pleased that the Trump Administration has made progress towards completing the leadership team at the USPTO," says Lisa Jorgenson, AIPLA Executive Director. "AIPLA congratulates Mr. Iancu on his nomination, and we look forward to learning more about his views regarding the Office."
